Stephen Lau
Biography
Stephen Lau is a Principal Lawyer and Team Leader in Coleman Greig’s Tax and Superannuation team.
Stephen specialises in tax advisory, tax planning and tax audit/dispute resolution covering all areas of tax including income tax, indirect tax, fringe benefit tax and stamp duty.
Stephen has a unique and extensive tax background which covers both in-house tax advisory, professional services at a big four chartered accounting firm and the Australian Taxation Office. Leveraging off his tax administration and commercial experience, Stephen takes pride in providing simple practical tax advice and commercial solutions to a broad range of clients including high net worth individuals, private groups, ASX listed entities and large multinationals.
He draws upon his unique and broad background and experience, described above, to provide creative, practical and timely solutions for his clients.

- Successfully engaged with tax authorities (Australia and other jurisdictions) to resolve multiple tax audits and obtain favourable outcomes.
- Successfully represented clients in a broad range of industries, (including property, IT, automobile, retail) and argued for non-imposition of assessment/penalties or remission of penalties totalling more than $100 million.
- Assisted clients to efficiently navigate ATO reviews and litigation processes and procedures (including Top 100, Top 1000 and Top 5000 reviews).
- Successfully managed multiple high profile, materially significant and complex litigations to achieve successful outcomes through the court at first instance and subsequent appeals to superior courts.
- Assisted clients in navigating complex and high-risk tax technical issues including in relation to business acquisition and disposals, family trusts, international transactions, small business tax concessions, General Anti-Avoidance rules, loss utilisation and withholding tax.
- Provided formal and informal tax technical advice in the form of private and public rulings in his role at the Australian Taxation Office as well as providing advice on and successfully requesting rulings on complex tax matters on behalf of clients.
