Greater Western Sydney Growth

The economic capital of Greater Western Sydney and the sixth largest CBD in Australia, Parramatta is a major business and commercial centre.  As the second largest employment hub outside of Sydney’s CBD, the city boasts an estimated 90,000 people working across a range of businesses, from family owned small to medium sized enterprises through to subsidiaries of major multinationals.  Parramatta is also home to Western Sydney University, one of the fastest growing universities in the country.

With the region currently experiencing a period of rapid economic and infrastructural growth, a few of the key projects taking place in Parramatta include:

The Redevelopment of Parramatta Square

One of the largest urban renewal projects in Australia, the redevelopment of Parramatta Square is set to revitalise Parramatta’s city centre with modern office spaces, a multi-level retail podium and new civic facilities.

Powerhouse Museum

The new and expanded Powerhouse Museum will form the centrepiece of a new arts and cultural precinct on the banks of the Parramatta River, including a modernised Riverside Theatres complex, cafes, bars and public spaces.

The Parramatta Light Rail

With services approximately every 7.5 minutes between 7am and 7pm, and every 15 minutes outside the all-day peak, the Parramatta Light Rail project will revolutionise the way people move around the region, creating more local jobs and improving overall access to major health and sporting destinations.

The NSW Government’s Metropolitan Strategy, ‘A Plan for Growing Sydney’, highlights Parramatta’s potential to provide 100,000 jobs over the next 20 years.  The Plan also sets out that Greater Parramatta (including Westmead, Parramatta North, Rydalmere and Camellia) will become one of the key Strategic Centres for Sydney.
