Biography

King Tan is a Special Counsel in Coleman Greig’s Taxation Team with specialist expertise in Taxation Advice and Tax Disputes.

King works with a broad range of clients from multinational and listed companies, Private corporations, high net wealth groups and professional advisers and has extensive experience in all areas of taxation including Federal taxes (such as income tax and capital gains tax), and State Taxes (such as duty and land tax).

He has assisted clients in business restructuring, acquisitions and disposals of assets, inbound and outbound investments, tax treatment of income, gains and expenditure as well as trust taxation and succession planning.

King’s experience working at a Big 4 chartered accounting firm and as a senior tax lawyer at an international law firm brings a range of skills and experience to his clients at Coleman Greig.

He is an active member of the tax community. King regularly presents on tax issues, including to accounting discussion groups and for the Tax Institute. He has also served on committees for the Tax Institute.

King Tan is a Special Counsel in our Taxation team. King assists clients with Taxation Advice and Tax Disputes and in relation to Federal taxes (such as income tax and capital gains tax) and State taxes (such as duty and land tax). Clients whom King has assisted include multinational and listed corporations, private corporations, high net wealth groups and professional advisers.

King’s experience includes providing assistance with:

- business structuring;
- acquisitions and disposals of assets and businesses;
- restructuring of corporate groups;
- inbound and outbound investments and cross-border arrangements;
- tax treatment of income, gains and expenditures;
- property developments and acquisitions;
- transfer duty, corporate reconstructions, foreign purchaser surcharge, landholder duty and land tax;
- trust taxation and succession planning; and
- managing tax disputes and investigations, including notices, risk reviews, tax audits, tax objections, litigation and dispute resolution.

King is passionate about tax. He enjoys taking time to understand his clients' circumstances and objectives and guiding them through the complex Australian tax system.

Outside of work, King enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, exploring culinary horizons and pursuing his interest in all things relating to basketball.

- Acting for a high net wealth group in preparing for and disposing of its shares in a real estate group to a foreign buyer for a headline price of $102.5m.
- Advising a private group on Division 7A and employee share scheme rules, including assisting the group in reviewing its employee share scheme for compliance with the ESS start-up rules.
- Advising a foreign company on cross-border tax issues from the provision of services to related members, including permanent establishment risks.
- Assisting a foreign listed company on a restructure of its Australian corporate group, including obtaining rulings from State revenue authorities on availability of corporate reconstruction duty relief.
- Acting for a high net wealth family in resolving multiple income tax disputes with the Commissioner of Taxation, including through mediation.
- Acting for a listed company in an income tax dispute with the Commissioner of Taxation concerning its foreign branch arrangement.
